ASK THE PASTOR

Pastor TatumThis section offers a more formal introduction to our Church, our Faith, its hopes and intentions for the Mount Pleasant and surrounding communities, and equally important, for the Body of Christ, our Lord and Savior.

The Elder Larry D. Tatum has presided as our Pastor (see photo on left) since 1988. This section begins with a few words of his, which we acknowledge as our Church’s vision statement. Intentionally brief, this statement provides a clear message and a “doable” focus for our collective efforts.

Insofar as we have aligned our beliefs, spiritual and otherwise, with the guiding principles of the Primitive Baptist Church, we thought it appropriate to describe, in some detail, what exactly those principles are, how they hang together as a religious philosophy, where they are historically rooted, and how we have come to favor those over other, similar Christian philosophies. Readers (and members as well) are, therefore, encouraged to spend some time with our discussion of the History of the Primitive Baptist Religion, as practiced in America.

This relatively broad history is followed by a shorter, more specific history of the New Sardis Primitive Baptist Church, here in Cleveland, Ohio. From its humble beginnings on Scoville Avenue in 1919, the leaders of our church and its development as a community resource are documented up and until its current role in the Mount Pleasant area, under the faithful leadership of Pastor Larry D. Tatum.

With all the above in mind, and with all due respects, we would now like to introduce you to our humble and beloved Pastor, Larry D. Tatum, who will discuss his personal philosophy and views on Christian faith, on family, on what our Church is all about, and on where he sees it moving to in the months and years to come.

Readers (and again, members as well) will find, as time goes on, that this section will also be used to more clearly develop the Pastor’s views on some of the day’s most important issues and topics. We mention this because we want to encourage lively interaction between the Pastor and others with regard to his views. So, if you have some questions that you’d like clarification on, or if you’d like him to air his understanding of a specific topic that’s perhaps not covered in Sunday Sermons or Bible Study classes, please feel free to ask the Pastor — you can use the comment form at the end of each one of his posts. Thanks for your time!
